18 December 2013, Rome – Boosting productivity, fostering competitiveness and ensuring that small-scale farmers have greater access to markets are key to West Africa realizing its full agricultural potential, according to a new study released today by FAO and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
The publication, Rebuilding West Africa’s Food Potential, presents a range of successful case studies since the region stepped up investments in agricultural development in the wake of the world food crisis in 2007-2008.
3 December 2013 – The world will need 70 per cent more food, as measured by calories, to feed a global population of 9.6 billion in 2050, and must achieve this through improvements in the way people produce and consume, according to a report released today by the United Nations and its partners.
“Over the next several decades, the world faces a grand challenge – and opportunity – at the intersection of food security, development and the environment,” said Andrew Steer, President of the World Resources Institute (WRI), which produced the report along with UN agencies and the World Bank.

13 November 2013 – Food systems will need to change significantly to tackle severe nutrition problems that currently afflict more than half of the world’s population, experts told a United Nations meeting in Rome today.
“It is clear that the ways in which food is managed today are failing to result in sufficient improvements in nutrition. The most shocking fact is that over 840 million people still suffer from hunger today, despite the fact that the world already produces enough food for all, and wastes one-third of it,” said the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organizations (FAO), José Graziano da Silva.
21 October 2013, Copenhagen/Rome - Keeping track of the enormity and nature of food loss and waste is essential to reducing the problem and to speeding efforts to eliminate hunger globally, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva told participants at the Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) in Copenhagen.
"FAO estimates that each year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted - around 1.3 billion tons. This costs around 750 billion dollars annually. If we reduce food loss and waste to zero it would give us additional food to feed 2 billion people," Graziano da Silva said.
7 October 2013, Rome - The Committee on World Food Security, the world’s most important intergovernmental and multi-stakeholderplatform for food security and nutrition, opened its 40th session (CFS 40) at FAO headquarters, amid urgent calls to build more effective links between international policies and the daily needs of millions of the world’s most vulnerable people.

25 September 2013 – World leaders meeting at United Nations Headquarters today agreed to take bolder action against extreme poverty, hunger and disease, and called for a summit to take place in 2015 to adopt the next set of anti-poverty goals, which will heavily focus on achieving sustainable development.
During a special event on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), countries adopted an outcome document which acknowledges the progress made since the eight global targets were set in 2000, while also committing to do more to tackle many remaining challenges and accelerate progress.
